To Hooker's division, which had engaged the rebels in front of Seven Pines.- Our regiment was engaged with the enemy in the afternoon and in the morning, but without loss, and held a most difficult position in face of the rebel force through the night.- Friday the ( 27th ) the regiment was paid off by Major Fessenden to May 1st 1862.- Saturday ( 28th ) the regiment was detached from the brigade and sent to Jordan & Ford, White Oak Swamp, and five miles to the left of our army lines, for the purpose of building a bridge across the ford to facilitate the retreat of our army by the left flank to James River .- a movement which was already begun, though we did not know that it was completed. We were employed in constructing and repairing roads and bridges in the vicinity of the swamp during Saturday afternoon and Sunday forenoon ( 29th )- Sunday afternoon the remainder of the brigade came up with us, and with them we crossed Jordan's ford and held back an attacking force of the enemy for about two hours till the entire force of our corps with artillery and supply trains had passed, when we returned and joined in the movement towards James River- our regiment acting as the extreme rear guard.- The consequence of the hurry of the movement and the want of teams, nearly all of our property in camp at Jordan's Ford had to be abandoned or destroyed -
