I am informed that Col. Ames of the 20th Regt has been promoted -- If so I trust that the necessary promotions will in the Regt will be made in regular order. I have formed a very high opinion of Lt. Col. Chamberlain, and Maj' Gil-more has done excellent service and is deservedly popular in the Regt. I presume there will not be an effort from any quarter for their reprecedure[?] -- I write to speak particularly for the promotion of Capt A. W. Clerk of Compy I whom
