General & Land Agent, preceeded by the Sheriff of the County of Kennebec, came in, when the members elect took and subscribed the oaths or affirmations required by the Constitution to qualify them to enter upon the discharge of their official duties.

A Committee, consisting of Messrs Jarvis of Ellsworth, Vose of Augusta, Brooks of York, Weeks of Jefferson, & Carpenter of Howland, was appointed to receive, sort and count the ballots for a Clerk, who having attended to the duty assigned them, reported that the whole number of ballots given in was One hundred & seventy - necessary to constitute an election, eighty six - that James L. Child had One hundred & twelve Daniel Pike had fifty seven & Eliakim Scammon one, and James L. Child of Augusta was declared elected, and being present, signified his acceptance and took and subscribed the following oath administered to him by Asaph R. Nichols Esquire, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Kennebec - viz "I, James L. Child do solemnly swear that I will faithfully discharge to the best of my abilities, the duties incumbent upon on me as Clerk of the House of Representatives of the State of Maine during the current political year. So help me God.
