228. Bill creating the Village of Augusta into a Corporation for certain purposes (reported by Mr. Emmons, from the same Committee, on petition of John H. Hartwell) Resolve in favor of John Bent (reported by Mr. Prescott, from the Committee on Claims, on petition of John Bent) severally read once and tomorrow at ten o'clock assigned for a second reading.

A communication was received from the Secretary of State transmitting the returns of the several Academies and Seminaries of Learning in this State -- read and referred to the Committee on Literature and Literary Institutions, in concurrence.

Mr. Emmons, from the Committee on the Judiciary to which was referred "Bill additional directing the method of laying out and making provision for the repair and amendment of highways," reported that said Bill ought not to pass - read and accepted. Sent down for concurrence. Concurred.

Order from the House of Representatives appointing a Joint Special Committee, consisting, on the part of the House of Messrs. Johnson of Cornish, Robinson of Hallowell and Spaulding of Norridgewock, with such as the Senate may join, to inquire into the expediency of repealing so much of the 15th section of an "Ac to provide for the education of Youth" passed March 11,1834, as requires the Selectmen of the several towns and Assessors of the several plantations to make certain returns to the Secretary of State -- read and passed and Messrs.
