by the teams and cooked coffee, then moved down the road 1 1/2 miles and camped for the night in the woods on the left of the road. Some cannonading in the direction of Bellfield Station in the night. Foragers found a grate amount of sweet potatoes an liquor and some got pretty tight. My tentmate boiled potatoes in whisky. This was a dreadful tedious night for the men for the rain and cold poured a sleat upon every thing it fell upon, the trees and ground was icy early in the morning.

10th A cold stormy morning. We started on the retreat with many a man staggering from the affects of old tanglefoot, and about a week we see it reported from rebel papers how many men were taken prisoners from the 5th and 2d Corps all on account of getting to much tangle foot. We reached Susex [Sussex] Court House after 21 miles of very mudy lost road, very tired, hungry and lame.

11th Showery all day. Marched 6 miles. We saw the Cavelry

12th A very cold morning. Started and marched back near our fords and camped near our old quarters.
