While I was having my wound dressed the surgeons lay a man on the table and took his leg off above the ankle joint.
April 1st We left that hospital early and traveled to the R.R. Station. I found Jonathan Pollard on the train wounded in the thigh. We arrived at City Point about noon.
Sunday 2d The wounded are coming in very fast, as well as prisoners. It is reported the the south side R.R. is actually taken. Heavy firing in the night.
3d We staid at city point all day. We went on board the transport Connecticut, P.M.
4th We started from city point at day light, passed Fortress Monroe at eleven oclock A.M. Quite rough out to sea. Got into the Potomac river about sunset and sailed all night.
5th We arived at Washington at 3 oclock in the morning and was conveyed to the Lincoln general hospital. A number of the 20th boys are here. Fowls [Gowan W Fowles] of Co H is here and well. Richmond was taken by Genl Weitzel Apr 3d 1865.
April 6th About ten patients were transfered to Philadelphia. This is my birthday. One year ago I reported from Lewiston to Portland.
7th News that Sheridan and the 6th corps had taken part of Lee's force and the rest must surrender.
