Brunswick July 17 1862 His Excellency Gov. Washburn
I received your note of yesterday, and thank you for your favorable opinion. I shall endeavor to comply with your request, and see you tomorrow. Meantime let me say that I only want to be where I can best serve you. I do not wish to stand in the way of others -- especially of our gallant men on the Potomac.
I believe I can get together a thousand men in a very short time, and shall hold myself entirely at your Excellency's errand in 10 days.
