Dearest Wife
I sit down a few moments to write you few lines to let you know that I am well at present and hope these few lines will find you the same I supposed you would like to here about our journey we left Portland last Saturday at 8 oclock and arrived here monday at 3 oclock PM we come in the cars to Boston and to Fall River then took the steam Boat to New York then the cars from ther to this place we passed through N. Jeresy Phelidelipetidel Baltimore that awful place we got out of the cars and marched through the principal streets we had no troble in the least the people ther did not receive us with so much applause as they did in other places but we had no troble whatever finly we had a very pleasant passage taking all things into account as for the country I seen nothing to compare with maine except New Jersy I should like to stop awhile an lok around there but could not I have not seen no state sinc i left maine that I would give maine for maine is ahead of all states I have seen yet I do not know what I shall see yet this place is nothing what I expeced see when I got here it a low sunken place with poor bildings except the publick bildings them are very nice other bildings very poor
