In recommending this subject to your consideration I indulge the hope that such measures will be adopted, as while they are least expensive to the State, shall be best calculated to protect the rights, and to secure to this, the last remnant of the natives residing among us, all that comfort which they are cap-able of enjoying. | ||

The Commonwealth has stipulated to pay the State of Maine, thirty thousand dollars for performing certain duties and obligations to the Indians within this state, provided the assent of the Indians and a release of that Commonwealth from all engagements to them are just obtained.
