SHERIFF AMOS F. CARLETON OF BELFAST.
At last! Here is the Sheriff, who fears not to take the law
And administer it justly, without seeking for the flaw;
Who will not evade the duty, for the sake of politics,
Or go searching for the oily gent, to reguIate a "fix."
For, if the editorial comment of the current dally press
Tells the story as it's written in the daily toil and stress
Of Sheriff Carleton's honest effort to do justice to all men,
Why! Old Waldo has the article to fill the place again.
He is fair and square and honest and is bound to do his best:
It's a thankless job to start with, with "enforcement" as the test.
But, in Waldo, they are saying that, where all are used the same,
Any man, like Sheriff Carleton, is beyond the reach of blame.
