Hon.
Hannibal Hamlin Governor of Maine
Dear Sir I am informed
by Mr. S. W. Smith, Marshall of this City, that he is desirous of attaining the situation of Agent to the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Indians. I know of no one more competent to discharge the duties properly belonging to that office, than Mr. Smith. His intentions with the Indians, & his experience in reference to their habits, wants, & needs of life, eminently qualify him for the place which he seeks. Having been personally acquainted with Mr. Smith, since his Boyhood & knowing as I do that he has ever Unstained an unexceptional character, I have no hesitation in saying, that it would be gratifying to me to have him successful in his application
With Much Respect Wm. D. Lawrence, Mayor of Calais
