Dear Sir,
I understand Seth W. Smith of this city is an applicant for the Indian Agency.
So far as my judgement goes his appointment will give general satisfaction. He has held the office and I think without any complaint from any quarter. He is acquainted with the wants and habits of our Indians, gives them his prompt attention, settles their disputes and I think there are very few who are so well calculated to satisfy & please them as he is.
If I am correctly informed as to his competitors for the office I don't hesitate to predict that his appointment would b the most judicious and acceptable.
Very Respectfully Your Servant, D.K. Chase
Hon. H. Hamlin Governor of the State of Maine in Augusta
