Arlington Heights Camp Rice Head Quarters, 2nd Regt Maine Volunteers

Aug 9th, 1861 Hon I. Washburn Jr

Dear Sir

It is understood by us here that there is soon to be some person appointed from Maine, paid by the State, whose duty will be to look particularly after the wants of our Maine Regiments in the field. It is exceedingly laborious for Cols. and other officers of a regiment to be continually [?] for hours about the various departments at Washington, and if these duties could be confided to a competent man in much better [?] would you [?] find our troops If such an appointment is made Col. Jameson, Major Varney, Quarter Master Lord and myself would prefer Dr. C.A. Gordon. He is a business man and thoroughly acquainted with all the [?] avenues leading to the various departments. In addition to the above he is a humane mand and one that the boys are always pleased with, should such an appointment be decided upon please not forget our wishes in this respect

Very Respectfully Yours in Haste

Lieut Col. Chas. W. Roberts 2nd Maine Regt
