Milo Aug 8 1861

My dear Gov

There are reports in circulation in this vicinity that the 2d Reg V [Volunteer] Maine Militia are not holden to the US but for 3 months from the 28th day of May last, although they enlisted to the state for 2 years. I wish to know the facts in this case, and know of no one to apply but your Excellency to ascertain the truth. It may make a great difference to me. And why - I have a son in that Reg - And if he is to come home this fall I shall enter into a business operation which will be more than I wish to do alone. If he is to be detained I shall not Under any consideration attempt it.

I congratulate you on the very unanimous nomination at Augusta on the 7th.

Very truly your friend
