40 I visit Fort Sumner and lelitins[?]

beelton station. I left the station on the train at dark and got to Alexandria at twelve oclock at night. 16th I started for Washington at seven oclock in the morning on board of the steamboat. We wer 3/4 of an hour on the way to the city. I started for Fort Sumner and got thair at noon. Found the boys all well in the 1st Me heavy artillery which was the 18th Maine infantry when they left the state. 17th I had a good time at the fort. I wrote a letter to Frances and sent the ring I brought to his. 18th We went down to Washington. It rained all of the forenoon. We went into the [?] and into the smithsonian institute. I had a good time. Got back to camp near sunset. I saw Dr Elkins that is set to practice at Ashland. I got a fiddlestring for a frenchman and he plaid all of the evening and we had a good time.
