Afternoon – Met according to adjournment.

Bill – additional to an act concerning the assessment & collection of taxes, reported in a new draft which was adopted, was read a third time and 300 copies ordered to be printed for the use of the Legislature.

Resolve providing compensation for certain officers of the Legislature, was read a second time & passed to be engrossed as amended at A. Sent up for concurrence.

Bill – granting a Lottery for the benefit of the Thomaston Coal and Mineral Company, was read a 1st & 2d time & tomorrow at 10 oclock assigned for a 3d reading.

Bill – additional to the several Acts now in force to organize, govern and discipline the Militia, was amended, and then on motion of Mr Clough of Fayette, indefinitely postponed.

Mr Chase of Livermore moved a reconsideration of the last vote, and the House assigned tomorrow at 10 oclock to consider said motion.

Bill – establishing salaries for Judges & Registers of Probate, was reported with the sundry amendments and before any question was taken thereon, the Bill, together with the reported amendments were referred to Messrs Quinnam of Wiscasset, Smith of Hollis, George of Newport, Higgins of Cape Elizabeth, & Clough of Fayette.

Bill – to establish the Kennebec & Androscoggin Canal Association was again taken up, and the motion of Mr Alden to refer the subject to the next Legislature &c. &c. was decided in the negative by yeas and nays as follows [see appendix page 309] yeas 40 nays 57 - & then the bill was passed to a third reading and
