Greeting:

[To left of following paragraph is a circle with the word “Seal.” written inside and “William D. Williamson” underneath]

Whereas, our Governor, by his commission, under our Seal, on the third day of March, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty one, appointed you Sheriff of our County of Penobscot; to which office you was duly commissioned and qualified: And whereas, on the twenty second day of October, instant, William D. Williamson, President of our Senate, and exercising the office of Governor, by and with the advice of our Council, appointed Royal Clarke, of Bangor, Esquire, Sheriff of our said County of Penobscot; by whose appointment, commission and qualification, you the said Jedediah Herrick, are suspended in the same office and removed therefrom:

WE, therefor, command you, that, without delay, you deliver over to the said Royal Clarke, the custody of our Gaol in our said county, and of all persons in your custody, as also all writs and precepts in your hands, which by law you ought to deliver to him, as you successor in said Office; and that you henceforth surcease the execution of any legal precept, under our authority, as Sheriff of the said County, either by yourself, or your deputies, excepting such as were in your or their hands at the time of the said Royal Clarke’s appointment.

Witness, William D. Williamson, President of our Senate, and exercising the Office of Governor, and our Seal hereunto affixed, this twenty second day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand, eight hundred and twenty one; and in the forty sixth year of the Independence of the United States of America.
