To Barrett Potter and Amos Nichols, Esquires, both of Portland, in the County of Cumberland,
Greeting

Whereas it is provided by a law of this State, that in case of vacancy in the Office of Treasurer, by death, resignation or otherwise, the governor, with advice and consent of the Council, shall appoint some suitable person, a Commissioner, to transact the duties of said Office during the remainder of the political year, for which such officer was chosen, unless the Legislature shall be sooner in Session: And whereas the said Office of Treasurer has become vacant by the death of Joseph C. Boyd, Esquire, and it has become necessary that a Commissioner should be appointed to transact the duties thereof, as aforesaid:
Now, therefore, I Albion K. Parris, Governor of the State of Maine, by and with the advice and consent of the Council, do hereby appoint you the said Barrett Potter and Amos Nichols, being discreet and impartial citizens of said State, having first given notice to the sureties of the late Treasurer or any two of them, to take a true and accurate inventory of all monies, notes, books of account and other property, belonging to the State, which was in the profession of said Boyd as Treasurer, or in the hands of any of his agents or servants, wherever to be found; all which you are to deliver over to the person who may be appointed to discharge the duties of Treasurer, as aforesaid, he giving a receipt therefor, agreeably to the provisions of the third Section of “An act providing for the security of the Treasury of this State,” passed June 13th 1820.
Given at the Council Chamber, in Portland, this fifteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty three; and in the forty seventh year of the Independence of the United States of America.
