To all who shall see these Presents.

Greeting.
Know Ye, that Jonathan G. Hunton, our Governor, reposing special trust and confidence in the integrity, ability and discretion of Milford P. Norton, of Canaan; Esquire, hath nominated, and by, and with the advice and consent of our Council, appointed, the said Milford P. Norton Esquire, Agent to superintend and manage the sale and settlement of the Public Lands, under the act entitled “An Act to promote the sale and settlement of Public Lands,” passed the twentieth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight.
We therefore, do hereby authorize and empower him to fulfil [fulfill] the duties of that office according to law; and to have and to hold the same, together with all the powers, privileges, and emoluments thereto of right appertaining, unto him the said Milford P. Norton, Esquire, for the term of four years, if he shall so long behave himself well in said Office, unless sooner removed by the Governor and Council for the time being.
In Testimony whereof, We have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and our Seal to be hereunto affixed. Witness, our Governor, at the Council Chamber, in Portland, the thirtieth day of March, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty; and of the Independence of the United States the fifty fourth.

County of Kennebeck [Kennebec] ss. On the third day of April A.D. 1830, personally appeared Milford P. Norton of Canaan in the County of Somerset Esquire and took and subscribed the oaths prescribed by the Constitution of this State and a Law of the United States, to qualify him to discharge and execute the duties of the Office of Agent to superintend and manage the sale and settlement of the public lands of the State of Maine, to which he was appointed and Commissioned, on the thirtieth day of March A.D. 1830.
