State of Maine.

By the Governor of the State of Maine:

A Proclamation

for a day of

Public Thanksgiving and Praise.

By and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, appoint Thursday the Sixth day of December next to be observed throughout this State as a day of Public Thanksgiving and Praise; that we may then, collectively as well as individually, offer unto Almighty God devout and grateful acknowledgments for the manifold and unmerited blessings He has bestowed upon us.

As in time past, we still behold our highly favored County abounding with the natural advantages, and in the full enjoyment of those civil and religious privileges, which have rendered us a Free, Powerful and Happy People. Our Republican Institutions, Liberties and Laws have been preserved to us unimpaired; Government of our own choice, administered by Agent, appointed by, and responsible to the people, are in peaceful operation; and freedom of conscience and of Worship, producing increased devotedness in the cause of religion, every where prevails.

Our Public Schools and Seminaries of Learning are dispensing the benign influences of Knowledge, Virtue and Piety among the Community; agriculture, Commerce and Manufactures, are rewarding with success the exertions of the enterprising and industrious; and undisturbed by foreign wars, or intestine[?] commotion, we are permitted quietly to cultivate the arts of Peace.

We have also reason to rejoice, that notwithstanding the unfavorable prospects of the opening year, the promise has again been verified, that seed-time and Harvest shall not fail. And especially would we adore the richness of that Goodness which has mercifully preserved the lives of the Citizens of our State from the appalling pestilence which has spread consternation and death through other States and distant nations:
