17th A fair day. Corpl G F Esterbrooks started home on a furlow of 20 days. Corpl J[?] Ingragaham is promoted to Sargt Pri Wm L King promoted to Corpl. Official orders has been read that Fort Fisher was taken by assault on the 16th inst. We have been looking for this good news for a long time.

Official orders has been read that Fort Fisher was taken by assault on the 16th inst. We have been looking for this good news for a long time.
 
18th We have drill twice a day, and dress parade every afternoon. The commiss-ioned officers are all absent  form my company and I am left in comand.
