Mr Swan laid upon the Clerks table the following order, which being read by the Clerk was unanimously[underlined] passed - vis, Ordered[underlined] that the thanks of this House be presented to the Hon. John Ruggles, Speaker, for the able & faithful discharge of his office; that this House, duly impressed with the responsibility & importance of the various duties incumbent on the Chair - consider this public expression of their approbation, as justly due for the impartial and dignified manner in which its laborious duties have been performed; and that he will please to carry with him, on his return to his family & constituents the best wishes of the members of this House. To which the Speaker replied, as follows - viz Gentlemen of the House of Representatives, I cannot but feel deeply sensible to the kind & flattering expression of approbation you have been pleased to bestow upon my humble endeavors to deserve the confidence with which you have honored me; and that expression devises no little value from the esteemed & respected source whence it emanated. If during the interesting session which is now drawing to a close, I have succeeded in any good degree, in an impartial discharge of the duties assigned me, I have but fulfilled my first & constant design. To you, gentlemen, I owe grateful acknowledgements for the indulgence & the support you have uniformly extended to the Chair. Upon the Representatives of a free people, holding in trust for a time a portion of their rights & of their power, no inconsiderable responsibility devolves; and I bear cheerful testimony to the fidelity & ability, which have characterized the members of this House in the performance of their public duties. In all our proceedings, I trust, a single eye has been had to the public good; and may we not hope to see the wisdom of our measures reflected in the smiles of our constituents and the general happiness of the people. Gentlemen - on separating allow me to tender to each of you individually, kind and friendly salutations. Be pleased to bear with you to the bosom of your respected families & friends, my best wishes for your welfare & happiness. And may the smiles of a benignant Providence attend you in all your walks & relations in life.

Adjourned until nine o clock on Monday morning next.

Attest

James L Child.

Clerk.
