A Message was received from the Senate proposing a convention of the two Houses, at ten o'clock this forenoon in the Representatives Chamber for the purpose of filling the vacancy in the Senate occasioned by the death of the Hon Benjamin Pike a Senator from the County of York and informing the House that Horace Porter and John A. Morrill are the Constitutional Candidates to fill that vacancy. requesting the concurrence of the House, and the House concurred - and the Clerk by Message communicated the same.
Report on the Petition of Wm. Sawin and others granting an order of notice came from the Senate accepted for concurrence and the House concurred.
Agreeably to assignment the two Houses met in convention in the Representatives Chamber for the purpose of filling the vacancy in York Senatorial District occasioned by the death of the Hon Benjamin Pike. Messrs. Scammon and Lithgow of the Senate, Dane of Kennebunk, Lord of South Berwick and Chadbourne of Baldwin of the House, were appointed a Committee to receive sort and count the votes - who having attended to the duty assigned them - report that that the whole number of votes given was one hundred and forty five - necessary to constitute an election - seventy three - Horace Porter had seventy eight, and was declared elected - And the Convention separated.
The Committee on Leave of Absence reported that Mr Washburn have leave of absence until Saturday next which was accepted.
