Brunswick Dec 6th 1865 My Dear C I have [attempted] it but [ ] you a Book in which a position of two papers I referred to [ ] copied I after authentic [ ] of paper [past? ed]-- There are incidents of a [ ] formal nature which it [ ] not be much proper for me either to write myself, or (by that convenient [ ] to which a [flaming?] modesty so often [process?]) to procure others to write for me. time will bring them out. I prefer that my reputation should improve [ ] a better knowledge of [ ], rather than diminish. I observe that in your report I am spoken of as absent from my Regt. occasionally without any remark to the effect that I was at that time coming the Brigade. [ ] I am [ cl? assed] [ ] with Col [Eiluese?] as "absent." when in fact I was at that time leading my Brigade into Battle. I had my horse shot there.
