The battle commenced again this morning at daylight abought 2 miles from Winchester.  the rebels had advanced during the night and had been heavly reinforced.  the battle commenced with terrible fearceness and continued until 8 oclock when our troops began to retreat.  the rebels outnumbered us nearly 6 to 1 we retreated in good order  our bagage being sent a head and the Cavalry covering the rear of the Infantry.  The road was strewed with [unintelligible words] blankets, overcoats, etc.

The rebels followed us with their Artillery and Cavalry nearly 50 miles.  We lost a good many men on the retreat.  the poor fellows drop down in the road all tired out.  the day was very warm.  We was in our saddles 23 hours to day.  some of our boys was all tired out and sleepy.  we came to the Potomac river and stopped till daylight.  it was most daylight when we got there.
