Bangor June 24 1862

Gov. Washburn

Dear Sir

Among the many young me who have gone from our city to the War none have distinguished themselves more than Joseph Chamberlain of Bangor now attached to Company A 2nd Maine who is here for the purpose of recruiting.

I am pleased to bear my testimony to the moral worth his general intelligence and from what I hear of him a brave soldier if these qualities can be rewarded by promotion it will be no detriment to our army and you cannot do a better service than to commission him as Lieut. in some of the many vacancys that are occurring.

Should you do so you will confer on him an unsolicited favor and please many of his personal friends
