Calais January 1st, 1857.

Hon. H. Hamlin

Dear Sir,

I herewith enclose a Petition, signed by the most of our prominent Republicans here. and also a few letters, from some of our leading men asking my appointment as agent for the Passamaquoddy tribe of Indians.

I was appointed to said office, by Gov. Crosby in 1854, but removed by Gov. Morrill, in 1855, but removed by Gov Wells, in 1856. Having been removed, as I was, upon Political grounds only, I should naturally take a pride in being restored.

Should you feel that by giving me that nomination, you would meet the wishes of the Republicans in this vicinity without conflicting with your own views, in the matter, I shall be greatly obliged.

Very Respectfully Your Obt. Servant

  Seth W. Smith
