I do assure you, I am not insensible of the value of your approbation, though I cannot well express my feelings on the occasion. To one, who has been educated in the principles of despotic governments, and taught to believe, that human dignity & greatness consist only in the power to exercise dominion over others, our political honors would be but marks of degradation and disgrace. Let such enjoy the blessings of their fancied honours, I will never envy them. But should I ever boast of honours received, it will be, that in eighteen hundred and twenty one, and two, I presided over the deliberations of an honorable, intelligent and independent body of the free and enlightened citizens of Maine. And while memory serves me, your approbation and thanks, so kindly expressed by my friend, the mover, will ever be cherished with grateful remembrance, and reciprocated with cordiality - Gentleman, I bid you a farewell; and may that God in whose hands are the destinies of us all, continually preside over you in mercy and at length afford to each of you the blessings of Eternity.
