Governor of the State of Maine;
Whereas, His Excellency William Eustis, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, hath represented that Parker Sargent, of Gloucester, in the County of Essex, and Commonwealth aforesaid, charged with the crime of stealing a horse and chaise from John Page, of Newburyport, in said County of Essex, is a fugitive from Justice, having fled to the State of Maine, and being now therein; And whereas a copy of the complaint, made by the said John Page, charging, under oath, the said Parker Sargent, with the crime aforesaid, is produced; And the said Parker Sargent, with the crime aforesaid, is produced; And the said William Eustis, Governor as aforesaid, having agreeably to the Constitution and a law of the United States, demanded that the said Parker Sargent, a fugitive from Justice as aforesaid, and as it is said, now in the custody of the Sheriff of our county of Cumberland, be delivered to the said John Page, appointed by the Governor of said Commonwealth, Agent to receive the said fugitive, that he may be transported to that commonwealth and dealt with according to law. Now therefore, I, Albion K. Parris, Governor of the said State of Mane, by virtue of the Constitution of the United States and a law of the same, as well as a law of this State, do require and command all and every of the Officers of this State, in whose custody the said Parker Sargent may be, and especially the Sheriff of our County of Cumberland, to deliver the said Parker Sargent, being a fugitive from Justice as aforesaid, to the said John Page, Agent as aforesaid, for this purpose specially appointed; unless the said Parker Sargent be holden by such officer, to answer for a violation of the laws of this State. And the said John Page is hereby authorized to transport the said Parker Sargent, to the line of the State of Maine, on the way to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, at the proper expense and charge of the said Agent. And all civil Officers within this State, are hereby commanded to afford the said John Page all needful assistance in transporting the said Parker Sargent to the line of the State, in execution of this Warrant.
In testimony whereof, I have caused the Seal of this State to be hereunto affixed; this seventeenth day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty three; And in the forty eighth year of the Independence of the United States.
