To all who shall see these Presents:

Greeting:

Know Ye, That Enoch Lincoln, our Governor, reposing special trust and confidence in the integrity, ability and discretion of Edwin Smith, of Warren, Esquire, hath nominated, and by and with the advice and consent of our Council, appointed the said Edwin Smith, one of the Inspectors of the State Prisons, under the Act, entitled “An Act providing for the government of the State Prisons, and for the punishment of Convicts;” passed the twenty fifth day of February A.D. 1824.

We therefore do hereby authorize and empower him to fulfil the duties of that office according to law; and to have and to hold the same, together with all the powers, privileges and emoluments, thereto of right appertaining, unto him the said Edwin Smith, for the term of four years, if he shall so long behave himself well in said Office, unless sooner removed by the Governor and Council for the time being.

In testimony whereof, we have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and our Seal to be hereunto affixed. Witness our Governor at the Council Chamber, in Portland, the fifth day of March, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty eight; and of the Independence of the United States the fifty second.

County of Lincoln ss. On the eleventh day of April A.D. 1828, personally appeared Edwin Smith of Warren in said County of Lincoln Esq. and took and subscribed the oaths prescribed by the Constitution of thie State and a Law of the United States, to qualify to discharge and execute the duties of the Office of Inspector of the State Prison within the County aforesaid, to which he was appointed and commissioned, on the fifth day of March A.D. 1828.
