Portland Aug 20th 1839

Dr [Dear] Sir

Capts Peol Toma and Peol Polis have shown me their commission and their order for funds out of the funds of tribe, to effect the objects stated in the commission -- They intend first to visit the President of the U. States, then the Western Indians, as many as they can and return in two months --

They have no funds nor have the tribe except what is in the funds of the State -- If there is money present by [?] the tribe I suppose arrangements may be made by you or through you, by which they can have the necessary funds -- How the Indian fund is disposed of by law I know not, but last year when the St. John & Passamaquoddy tribes came to Old Town to assist the Penobscots in the choice of Gov. I was at Gov. Hunt's house when a deportation of Indians called, and he enquired whether they had been supplied according to directions, to which they answered yes -- They then made a further re- quest for which the Gov. gave them an order --

They will hand you this letter, and I hope you will find it in your power to comply with their wishes and the wishes of the tribe --

The business has been done according to the customs & usage of the tribe --

I am Sir very respectfully Your Most Obt. Svt,

John G. Deane

John Fairfield, Esq. Gov. of Maine
