Last winter I was thought by many that for certain reasons not now necessary to mention a vacancy might occur in the office of Agent for the Penobscot tribe of Indians and in anticipation of such vacancy I then took some measures to bring myself before you for appointment to said office in case of a vacancy.

You may perhaps recollect a conversation between yourself & Mr A Smith Jr of this city upon the subject and also the reception of letters from [?] Wakefield[?] Godfrey, & [?] touching[?] the same matter As no vacancy was at that time made I of course made no faithful effects to obtain the appointment.

I am today credibly informed that Mr. Staples the present incumbent has made sale of all his property at Old Town with the intention of immediately leaving this part of the Country. This being the
