Governor of the State of Maine

Whereas His Excellency Levi Lincoln, governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts hath represented that John C R. Palmer Jun late resident at Salem in the County of Essex, laborer, charged according to Law, with the Murder of Joseph White, committed at Salem aforesaid on the sixth day of April last; is a fugitive from justice, having fled to the State of Maine, and is now commorant at Belfast in the County of Waldo. And whereas a copy of the complaint made by Gideon Barstow, Jno.[Jonathan] W. Treadwell and Philip Chase, charging under oath, the said John C. R. Palmer Jun. with the crime aforesaid, having agreeably to the Constitution and a law of the United States, demanded that the said John C. R. Palmer Jun. a fugitive from justice as aforesaid, and as it is said now commorant at Belfast in our County of Waldo, be arrested and delivered to George Jones appointed by the Governor of said Commonwealth, Agent to receive the said fugitive, that hey may be transported to that Commonwealth and dealt with according to law.

Now therefore I, Jonathan G. Hunton, Governor of the said State of Maine, by virtue of the Constitution of the United States, and a law of the same, as well as a law of this State, do require and command all and every of the officers of this State and especially the Sheriff of our County of Waldo, to arrest and deliver the said John C. R. Palmer Jun., being a fugitive from Justice as aforesaid, to the said George Jones, Agent as aforesaid, for this purpose specially appointed, unless the said John C. R. Palmer Jun. be holden by such officer to answer for a violation of the laws of this State. And the said George Jones is hereby authorized to transport the said John C. R. Palmer Jun. to the line of the State of Maine, on the way to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, at the proper expense and charge of the said Agent. And all civil officers within this State are hereby commanded to afford the said George Jones all needful assistance in transporting the said John C. R. Palmer Jun to the line of the State, in execution of this warrant.
