in the Representatives Chamber, and invite their attendance forthwith, in order that both branches may there in the presence of the Governor take & subscribe the oaths of qualification.

The Senators came in accordingly, and had seats assigned them.

A message was sent to the Governor informing him that a quorum of the two branches of the Legislature are assembled in the Representatives Chamber & ready to be qualified & requesting him to attend there & administer to them the oaths of office.

Accordingly, Enoch Lincoln, Governor of the State of Maine, attended by the Council, Secretary of State, Treasurer of State & Adjutant General, came in, when in their presence the Senators present, took & subscribed the oaths required by the Constitution to qualify them to enter upon the discharge of their official duties - after which the Representatives present, took and subscribed the oaths required by the Constitution to qualify them to enter upon the discharge of the duties of their office.

A committee, consisting of Messrs Boutelle of Waterville, Coburn of Bloomfield, Kent of Bangor, McCobb of Phipsburg & Jewett of South Berwick, was appointed to receive, sort and count the votes for a Clerk; and on counting the same it appeared the whole number given was One hundred & forty two - necessary to a choice, Seventy two - that James Loring Child of Alna had One hundred & thirty six, and was duly elected - and being present, he signified his acceptance, expressed his acknowledgements to the House, and then took and subscribed the following Oath of office which was administered to him by the Chairman -. "I, James Loring Child do solemnly swear that I will faithfully discharge to the best of my abilities the duties incumbent upon me as Clerk of the House of Representatives of the State of Maine."
