Yours of the 17th inst is before me. Am exceedingly pleased to learn that efforts are being made to refill my regt. The little 2nd however has no commissions to bestow upon outsiders, they must come as privates and by their soldierly conduct earn promotion. I have now divers & sundry sergeants & corporals abundantly able to perform acceptably the duties of capts., Lieuts & even Cols say nothing about the line officers in the command. Please give my kind regards to his Excellency the Gov. also to one Col. Harding, Major Miller & Fenno. Just before we get prepared to take
