Oldtown Nov 20

My dear Sir

If you deem it proper will you favor us with a certificate to the character of the names on the enclosed or such other line on it as you are free to make; we want to [?] Staples if we can, He was to have been elected Lieut. and could have had the votes but gave way for sake of peace. Staples is a worthy man, a member of the Orthodox church on good standing - prays and preys well, on his knees or enemies. He is somewhat lazy - never was known to run from anything, especially from the [?]. It is said at the Battle of Bull Run when the [?] rushed past him he stood like the [?] man in a stormy night, amid the clouds that hurrying by, left him alone unshaken in the sky"

Please return enclosed so that I can forward to Staples.

Yours truly G.P. Sewall
