If in your power to fill up at an early day the 2nd Maine Regiment, now wanting 260 men, you will be doing a most efficient regiment - and a gallant one, excellent service which will [?] to the credit of the State so soon as the regiment takes to active service which I doubt not will be soon. The regiment is small in comparison with those from other States in the same brigade, which have been kept at the maximum. The regiment is well armed, equipped, disciplined & drilled and prepared to take the field - but its small numbers will not permit it to compete to the desired extent, with other excellent regiments in the same brigade & division. May I ask
