264. Ordered, That the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into the expediency of providing by law for the attendance of witnesses residing in this State on trails of criminal prosecutions in other States. Sent up for concurrence

Petition of Samuel Smith & Edward Smith to be incorporated by the name of "Smiths Proprietary" was read and referred to the committee on Manufactures. Sent up for concurrence.

On motion by Mr McIntire of Parsonsfield Ordered, That the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into the expediency of providing that the law prohibiting Sheriffs & Deputy Sheriffs from acting as Attornies to parties, be extended to Constables. Sent up for concurrence

On motion by Mr Hubbard of Wiscasset, Ordered, That a select Committee to consist of one from each County be appointed to consider the expediency of compensating Clerks of the Judicial Courts & County Attornies by Salary instead of allowing them the fees they now receive & also to inquire what reduction or alteration (if any) of their fees or compensation is expedient - and Messrs Hubbard of Wiscasset, Maxwell of Poland, Dillingham of Turner, Holmes of Alfred, Batchelder of Litchfield, Marden of Palermo, Fifield of Deer Isle, Webb of Bloomfield, Burr of Argyle & Small of Machias were appointed said Committee.
