General,
As Maine is now engaged in furnishing her quota of the 500,000 additional troops called for by Proclamation of the President dated July 1862 thereby necessitating the appointment of Officers from civil life and regiments in the field, and it having been my aim to merit promotion and serve my Country in a higher capacity that the one I now fill. I most respectfully ask your influence in procuring for me a Lieutenant Commission in one of the regiments now forming in Maine. The position which I have occupied (that of Clerk at Brigade HeadQuarters) for the past nine months has necessarily placed me out of the line of promotion in my own regiment while such promotions as have taken place have been won by gallant services rendered out on the field of battle in the many brilliant actions in which it has taken part in which attention over (underlined)
