38 May 26th We crossed the river at 6 oclock by fording it, the water coming nearly over our horses backs several horses was drowned. We crossed over to the town of Williamsport Md. went out one mile from the town and camped.

May 27th We did not do enything to day. We are pretty well tired out and so is our horses.

May 28th Received orders again to day to go back over to Virginia to drive back a body of rebels that have advanced nearly to the river. They

fell back within 3 or 4 miles of the river and began to shell our troops. The 10th Maine rigement had been engaged nearly all day.

At dark our Pickets guard was driven in and our troops was frightened and they retreated back again over the river. Company H of the 1st Maine Cavalry was the last company to retreat. Myself with 2 other fellows was ordered to go up on a hill and watch the rebels. when our forces retreated they did not send word to us so we had to stay there all night a lone. we came back over the river
