Hampden Academy Feb. 28th 1863

Hon. Hannibal Hamlin,

Dear Sir, At the request of his friends, with pleasure I recommend to your favorable consideration and assistance, if you can give it, Mr. John Sawyer, formerly a student in this Academy, but since the commencement of the war a member of Co. K. 2d Maine Regiment. He has been in must[??] every engagement in which his regiment has participated and has been wounded twice. He is now a sergeant. The two Lieutenancies in his Company are at present vacant, his friends wish to secure one of those for him, and any assistance you may be able to give, I think will be worthily bestowed.

Very respectfully Daniel C. Burleigh
