Knowing that there were some two or three regiments to be officered from Maine, my friends at home advised me to writ a few lines to you in regard to myself having been in the service about two years and constantly in active service I thought I was fitted for a higher position and knowing that it was in your power to commission officers of every grade I would most respectfully ask your earliest attention to this matter I can
