Camp at Westover Landing Va Aug 14th 1862 Mr Washburn

      Although I am personally

unknown to you, yet I take the liberty of writing to request an appointment as Captain in one of the new Maine Regts. I am 1st Lieut of Co I 2nd Maine have been in command of the co since May 1st 1862 and have been the only officer in the co for duty since June 9th as Capt Farnsey + Lieut Forbes are in Maine on recruiting service. I was in command of the co at the battles of Hanover CH, Gaines Mills + Malvern Hills. As to my ability to command a co I respectfully refer you to Gen Jaimeson. Col.
