84 night. during the night our troops all fell back here to Centerville and have made a stand here and are making preparations to fight again we wa renforced to night by some of Genral Mcllclans troops.
August 31st
our troop have made a stand here too Centerville and are forming a line of battle ready to give the rebels fight who are said to be advancing. I am orderly again to day to General Porter. I hope God will spare my life if I have to go in to battle again to day it is raining this morning. it is now abought 9 oclock in the forenoon. the rebels have not come

in sight to day. guess they got cut up pretty bad or else they would follow us.
September 1st the army is till at Centerville waiting for the rebels to advance but they did not come in sight to day. the rebels drove in our Pickets this evening. We leave Centerville to night going to fall back to [illegible] Fairfax Court House. We are gitting pretty nigh to Washington again and I guess the rebels are about as nigh as we are for they destroyed some of our wagons last night between here and Centerville. They had quite a little fight last night our folks beat them.
