attention. I could procure a larger number of recommendations, but have refrained from doing so, considering that they would be deemed superfluous, and, confining myself to those persons with whom I have been associated, and who in consequence best know my qualifications to hold the position for which I ask, leaves them to vouch for me.

I believe it has been the custom for those applying for commissions to bring a certain number of recruits to the field, my presence in the Army as an enlisted man, has necessarily prevented me from doing so, but should I receive a commission, thereby being released from my bond, I could give the matter my personal attention, and I can assure you Sir, with confidence, that through influential friends, and my own exertions, I could in a very short time, furnish my quota of a Company. As I have before stated, I should not have made the application were I not out of the line of promotion in my own regiment.

Very Respectfully Your most obt. servt Geo. C. Holt Private Co. A 2nd Regt Maine Vols
