Dear Sir,
Your kind note of the 8th inst asking what were my plans & expectations was received last night. In reply I would say that having failed to make any arrangement with Col. Mason I had about concluded it was useless to attempt further efforts to secure a commission. And yet I did not like to give it up altogether: first because I had commenced and persevered so long at it and next because I had expended so much money which would be lost unless I could get a Lieut'cy.
May I again venture to ask you to consider favorably my claims of service in the field fitting me by experience for the position I seek & of money and efforts spend in obtaining men who are now in the U.S. service.
