Calais January 1st 1857 Hon. Hannibal Hamlin Govenor of Maine

Mr. Seth W. Smith of Calais informs me that he seeks the appointment of agent for the Passamaquoddy tribe of indians- From a long acquaintanceship with Mr. Smith and some knowledge of the manner in which he has acquitted himself in a similar position heretofore, I have no hesitation in recommending him as eminently fitted for the place he desires.

Very respectfully

Chas. E. Swan
