the public judge, If I have failed to met your reasonable expectations it has been from inexperience o [or?] lack of ability, for I assure you I have spared no pains to keep up the reputation of the Maine 2nd to the highest possible standard the circumstances of the case would admit of.

I would recommend for the interest of the Regt the immediate promotion of Lt. Col. Roberts &[?] [?] [?] and the gratification of their wishes as far as practicable in the appointment of Maj. to fill the vacancy caused by their promotion.
