are horrid things to carry + it dis- courages the men to be obliged to were them. The 4th Regt went into Camp yesterday in our immediate vicinity - The four Regts - one now encamped very near together. Since the late disasters occasioned by the inexperience of the Brig. Gen's. I think there is a strong desire among the military to have regular Army Officers appointed to these im- -portant posts. That is the way I feel at present. Still there may be some similar man in Maine for that position, but I can think of no one at this time. I feel very anxious indeed when my Regt filled up as soon as possible + I think it can be done in Bangor in a very few days if the proper authority is given, which un- doubtedly will be done.

                                   I remain
                 Very REspectfully your [?word]
