Ordered that the thanks of this House be presented to the Hon. John Ruggles, Speaker, for the able & faithful discharge of his office; that this House, duly impressed with the responsibility & importance of the various duties incumbent on the Chair consider this public expression of their approbation, as justly due for the impartial and dignified manner in which its laborious duties have been performed; and that he will please to carry with him, on his return to his family & constituents the best wishes of the members of this House.
To which the Speaker replied, as follows - viz

Gentlemen of the House of Representatives,

I cannot but feel deeply sensible to the kind & flattering expression of approbation you have been pleased to bestow upon my humble endeavors to deserve the confidence with which you have honored me; and that expression devises no little value from the esteemed & respected source whence it manated. If during the interesting session which is now drawing to close, I have succeeded many good degree in an impartial discharge of the duties assigned me, I have but feel filled my first & constant design. To you, gentlemen, I owe grateful acknowledgements for the indulgence & the support you have uniformly extended to the Chair.
Upon the Representatives of a free people, holding intrust for a time a portion of their nights & of their power. no inconsiderable responsibility devolves; and I bear cheerful testimony to the fidelity & ability, which have characterized the members of this House in the performance of their public duties. In all our proceedings, I trust, a single eye has been had to the public good; and may we not hope to see the wisdom of our measures reflected in the smiles of our constituents and the general happiness of the people.
